SHOTEN was established in Tokyo in 1892 by Kenkichi NAGAO(1860- 1937) who
was the first western picture frame maker in Japan. The company has its
own building in Tokyo and incorporated in 1963.
allery ISOGAYA open in 1985 at the 7th floor in this building for the art & craft Gallery. The first exhibition is "Contemporary Clay Works". (20 artists: Shun Ishiyama, Kenji Kuze, Ryouji Koie, Eijin Satonaka, Koueki Sugiura, Kinpei Nakamura, Yohei Nishimura, Hideyuki Hayashi, Shiro Hayami, Akira Hoshino, Kimiyo Mishima, Rikichi Miyanaga, Hikaru Yamada, Kiyoyuki Kato, Takuo Kato, Tatsusuke Kuriki, Junpei Sugie, Shin Fujihira, Taimei Morino, Mutsuo Yanagihara ) . The gallery conducted over 390 exhibitions until 2001. And managed a solo exhibition Sheila Hicks at Kiryu cultural institution art gallery (Gunma/ Japan), and Paper, Wood, Clay hat Cairns Regional Gallery (Cairns /Australia ).
he gallery has represented such seminal artists as Kiyoyuki Kato, Yukio Nakagawa, Shosuke Osawa, Toshio Kajiyama, Shin Fujihira, Toshio Sekiji, Sheila Hicks, Hisako Sekijima, Fusako Akao, Lis Brizard, Isaburo Kado, Tsutomu Taniguchi, Yohei Nishimura,Yuriko Matsuda, Masako Hayashibe, Masuko Emi, Fusako Akao, Ryuichiro Nakamura, Jun Konishi and Yutaka Imose.
